How to get an official RTA Drivers License

To get an official RTA Drivers License for the Class of vehicle or machinery that you need you have to do the following:

Complete your Compulsory Practical Drivers License Training
Complete an online application using the links below for the Class of Drivers License that you want to get
Pay the required fee - after the fee has been paid you will be able to do the Theory Test
Pass the Theory Test
Book a Practical Driving Test - the booking link will be available after you pass the Theory Test
Pass the Practical Driving Test - they will verify you have passed the Theory Test by checking their computer records
Go to the RTA office - They will verify you have passed the Theory Test and Practical Test by checking their computer records
Pay the RTA fee
Your official RTA Drivers License will be issued

Classes of Drivers Licenses

There are seven classes of Drivers Licenses:

Class 1 - Motor Cars equipped to sit not more than eight adult persons including the driver, excepts the motor cars which carry passengers for hire or reward. Motor lorries weighing not more than two tonnes unladen

Class 2 - Taxi Driving License only

Class 3 - Motor Lorries of any weight other than (a) Articulated Vehicles and (b) Large Trailer combination AND all vehicles of Class 1

Class 4 - Motor Lorries of any weight including (a) Articulated Vehicles and (b) Large Trailer combination AND all vehicles of Class 1

Class 5 - Motor Cycle

Class 6 - Motor Omnibus and all other vehicles EXCEPT (a) Articulated Vehicles (b) Large Trailer combinations and (c) motor cycles

Class 7 - (a) Motor tractor (b) Forklifts (c) Bulldozers

It is an RTA requirement that you complete Compulsory Practical Drivers License Training prior to the issue of the official RTA Drivers License

If you have an existing Drivers License - One Compulsory Practical Drivers License Training session prior to completing the Practical Drivers License Test

If you do not have an existing Drivers License - Three Compulsory Practical Drivers License Training session prior to completing the Practical Drivers License Test

We encourage you to do the Practice Drivers License Theory Test for the Class of Drivers License that you want

The Practice Drivers License Theory Test will get you ready and feel confident for the Real Drivers License Theory Test

You can do the test as many times as you want so you can get ready for the Real Drivers License Theory Test

If you get a question wrong you can check the correct answer so you can study for the Real Drivers License Theory Test

There is no cost for doing any of the Practice Drivers License Theory Tests

Application Process for each Class of Drivers License

Just click on the link below for the Application Form for the Drivers License Theory and Practical Tests for the Class of Drivers License that you want to get

The Application Form and the Theory Test are done on your mobile phone, IPad, tablet or desktop computer

You need internet access to get the Application Form, complete the Drivers License Theory Test and book the Practical Driving Test.

Before you click on a link make sure you have the following information available to upload into the Application Form.

Your identification documents. This can be a Birth certificate, passport, previous PNG Drivers License or a Letter of Identification from someone who knows you
Your personal photograph. The photograph must be recent and show your face front on. There should be no one else in the photograph except yourself. If you are completing the Application Form using your mobile phone you will be able to take a picture and upload it directly to the Application Form. If you are using a desktop computer you will need to take a picture and save it to the Desktop Computer to upload
A valid Credit or Debit Card. The card should be in your name or you should have authorisation to use the card if it is not in your name
